It’s time for second beats, and there are endless options. Now what? Liz will share her opinion about this. Second beats are the unsung workhorses of long-form. They are a platform for patterns, solidifying tone, and expanding characters. But usually, they ‘just happen’ and are under-utilized. Frequently, they’re boring linear repeats of the first beats, mired in plot, or tangents that bear no resemblance to the first beats. But, when second beats focus on character and non-plot aspects of the first beats, then a fulfilling long-form is underway.
In this workshop, Liz shares her techniques on how to approach second beats and their influence on form.
